Skillpoint Attends Austin Chamber of Commerce’s State of Education Luncheon

state-of-educationSkillpoint staff attended the Austin Chamber of Commerce’s third annual State of Education in Austin luncheon earlier today. The event, which highlights the state of public education in Austin and awards outstanding schools and districts, announced today great growth in the number of students working toward postsecondary education. Those districts honored included all but one of Skillpoint’s partner districts.

The Chamber said that 20 percent more Metro Austin students applied to college through www.applytexas.org than last year, and 17 percent more completed a FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA, processed at no cost to the applicant, is used to determine a student’s eligibility for federal grant, loan and work funds. The Chamber credits the ‘Financial Aid Saturday’ program with the increase in FAFSA completions.

‘Financial Aid Saturdays’ run from February through March. Volunteers assist students and parents/guardians with filling out the FAFSA and/or additional financial aid forms. All ‘Financial Aid Saturdays’ are scheduled from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at Metro Austin high schools. The Austin Chamber of Commerce needs volunteers. To see a list of volunteer requirements and other opportunities for involvement, see www.austinchamber.com/collegeready.

The Chamber is also in need of donations for its Opportunity 2.0 program, a business initiative developed in order to continue Central Texas’ strong economic development growth and to more effectively compete with national and international communities in attracting and retaining talent and businesses. Skillpoint’s Technology & Education Executive Council (TEEC) receives funding from this initiative. Please check out Opportunity Austin’s Web site to learn more about the initiative and how to donate.

Skillpoint would like to congratulate our district partners that received awards today and looks forward to continuing working with the Chamber to meet the needs of the community.
